Westford Conservation Trust Members Diane Duane, Emily Edwards and her daughter Jane came to the Miller School Library to present the bird program to 2nd grade students on Wednesday, October 18. Students learned how to use binoculars, how to identify birds and gather data for the town-wide bird identification program. Second graders will participate in the bird program during their library classes this year.
It was so much fun seeing parents and children explore math and science activities this past Monday- the cafeteria was full of smiles and energy! Thank you to Mrs. Burke for all her hard work in organizing this event - what a great way to celebrate learning!
Check out the photos below!
Did you know that this is National Bus Safety Week? It is, and Miller children have been hard at work thinking of ways to recognize our hard working drivers and to keep safe on the bus.
This afternoon children gave each driver a tumbler inscribed with this poem:
Your safe, skillful driving makes us glad to count on you.
You're a super driver.
Thanks for all you do!
They also gave the drivers thank you notes and pledges to be safe on the bus.
What a great night we had last Friday evening. Thank you to the many parent volunteers, PTO members and our two fabulous Blanchard Middle School volunteers Lauren and Emily. Everyone had a great time and danced the night away for a great cause - we raised over $1300.00 for the new playground at Day School.
Fuzzy Bear even made an appearance to dance with Miller friends! Check out the slide show below.
This year Mrs. Brake, Mrs. Dinitto, Mrs. McDermott and I are on the lookout for acts of kindness. Whenever we see a child, or group of children being kind, we will give them a small button to recognize their kindness. On Wednesday I was greeted by such a kind and caring group of students. I watched Mrs. P's class as they walked quietly down the stairs, as they passed me they waved or whispered hello, or have a nice day.
What a wonderful group of kindergarteners!
This school year Miller School staff are working together to better understand how sensory regulation impacts student learning. As adults we are able to recognize when we need to take a walk or breathe deeply before beginning a challenging task or when dealing with a stressful situation. Through experience we understand how to make sure our "brains" and "bodies" are ready. Children require instruction to better understand how they can help themselves to be better prepared for learning or for dealing with challenging situations.
Throughout the school you will notice some new artwork on the walls of each grade level wing. These images serve as reminders to children to take a moment for deep breathing or do some wall push-ups.
At our first Town Meeting on Monday September 25, Mrs. Wauthier and Mrs Hannaford created a video to teach children how to use these stations and as important to help children recognize when they could benefit from a sensory break. As we progress through the year I will share resources and our new learning through our blog and in my weekly email.
GThank you to Chrisitne Berthold of Fresh Start Food gardens for coming to Miller on Monday to teach our second graders about gardening. The children planted seedlings of lettuce which should be harvested and served in our school cafeteria in about six weeks. Now that's farm to table!
Miller School held its first full-day community Field Day today and it was amazing! Thank you to Mrs. Hannaford and the many parent volunteers, the children and staff had so much fun and this would not have been possible without your support.
On Thursday children attended the presentation
Bubbleology and were completely mesmerized
while the presenter created bubbles in all shapes and sizes.
He even made a bubble and placed a toy dinosaur inside.
Later in the show he asked for a student volunteer.
Katherine found herself inside a bubble rainbow!
Ask your child all about it!
